In Germanic folklore a mythological creature comes in the dead of night. It sends spine-chilling dread to individuals and plagues them with insomnia. This creature’s main purpose is to prey upon its unsuspecting victims while they sleep in their warm comfortable beds. This nocturnal spirit is called the Drude. Drude is another name for witch. They work their magic by stealing sweet dreams of their victims and replacing them with nightmares. The most successful way of preventing a visit is to utilize charms such as a Drudenfuss (pentagram) or a Drudenstein (pebble with a naturally forming hole in the center). Southern Germany is where the Drude tales came to life, while stories did branch out to different Scandinavian countries throughout the years it is mainly centered in Southern Germany.
